Providing Opportunities for Women in Education Research

(POWER)

The mission of Providing Opportunities for Women in Educational Research (POWER) is to connect, support, and advocate for those researchers who identify as women or non-binary in the fields of education and child development. We seek to reduce gender inequity in leadership roles, establish a professional network to maximize career advancement and retention, and enhance women’s visibility in the field.

POWER has three guiding principles:
  1. Connect:  We connect women through local and national networking opportunities. We also curate a database of researchers to serve as a resource for scholars, journal editors, or reporters to find content experts in the field.
  2. Support: We support women through professional development and mentoring opportunities, as well as by providing a repository of online resources.
  3. Advocate: We advocate for women in education research by celebrating their accomplishments and increasing awareness of professional and advancement opportunities.
Women make up 69% of doctoral degrees in Education (NSF, 2019) yet they occupy fewer leadership roles in professional societies and faculty administration, are less likely to achieve tenure and full professor status, and are less likely to obtain federal funding than their male peers.
